Mitsui Kinzoku Co., Ltd. (head office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Takeshi Nou) announces that it has decided to bolster its internal structure to promote its functional porous materials business and facilitate initiatives that the Business Creation Sector has been implementing, specifically the acceleration of the commercialization of these materials and the expansion of their areas of application.
Current megatrends include the medium- to long-term decarbonization of society, the transition to a circular economy, the acceleration of electrification and the broader use of batteries. In response, we have been engaged in research and development to maximize functional porous materials with an eye toward the creation of new businesses that contribute to the realization of a sustainable society. We have also been accelerating initiatives to commercialize these materials. One example of these efforts is a CO2 capture technology demonstration experiment we began at our smelting facility, which makes use of these materials.
The functional porous materials we are developing are solid materials with microscopic pores. By using surface treatments to select and control the composition, crystalline structure and pore structure of the materials, etc., we achieve the transformation of substances through the adsorption, separation and concentration of gases and ions, and enable the materials to have catalytic functions. We will facilitate the development of new functional porous material technologies, mainly in the areas of design, synthetization and surface treatment, by using the materials, evaluation and mass production technologies we have developed over many years, and engaging in collaborative creation activities with external partners, aiming to commercialize these materials for many different markets.
With this in mind, we will strengthen our internal structure by ensuring that the themes related to functional porous materials that we have developed and nurtured are centrally managed within the FPM Business Promotion Unit, which was previously established within the Business Creation Sector. Meanwhile, we will install pilot test equipment within our Corporate R&D Center in the first half of 2026 to accelerate the development of these materials. The Corporate R&D Center will continue to engage in the research and development of related materials. We will facilitate the growth and expansion of the functional porous materials business by ensuring that themes that have reached the commercialization stage at the Center are managed centrally within the FPM Business Promotion Unit.
