Mitsui Kinzoku Signs Joint Development Agreement with Factorial Energy Toward the Commercialization of All-Solid-State Batteries

Mitsui Kinzoku Company, Limited (President: Seiji Ikenobu) hereby announces that it entered into a joint development agreement with Factorial Energy, a global leader in solid-state battery technology headquartered in Massachusetts, U.S.A. (“Factorial”), toward the commercialization of all-solid-state batteries (“ASSBs”).

This agreement aims to advance the development of battery cell manufacturing processes using Mitsui Kinzoku’s sulfide solid electrolyte material, “A-SOLiD™ ”, and to accelerate the commercialization of ASSBs.

In recent years, expectations have grown for ASSBs as a technology capable of achieving both high energy density and safety compared to current lithium-ion batteries. For the commercialization of ASSBs, in addition to developing high-performance solid electrolyte materials, one important challenge is the development of battery cell manufacturing processes that enable such materials to deliver their full performance. A-SOLiD™ is expected to contribute to the commercialization of ASSBs as a material that combines high ionic conductivity with excellent processability.

Factorial, as one of the key partners, will remain the fabless innovator and technology leader for all-solid-state battery cells across the platform, leading cell design, process development, supply chain qualification, line integration, and manufacturing validation.

This collaboration will combine Mitsui Kinzoku’s solid electrolyte material development technologies with Factorial’s ASSBs development technologies to enhance the performance of solid electrolyte materials using A-SOLiD™ and to develop layer formation technologies. Leveraging the strengths of both companies, the partners will address key technical challenges, verify suitability for mass production, and contribute to the development of the ASSB market.

Guided by its purpose, “Making the Earth smile through the exploration and integration of diverse technologies,” Mitsui Kinzoku is working to create new value in the field of battery materials. Going forward, the company will continue to contribute to the realization of a sustainable mobility and energy society through co-creation with external partners.
